RAM Configuration:

  • Modules can be installed in many different combinations.

  • When using SIMMS it is important to install in matching pairs.

  • Dimms of different sizes may be used at the same time.

  • When using DIMMS you must use 3.3v (unbuffered) EDO/SDRAM.

  • FIC recommends that you do not mix SIMMS & DIMMS as this could adversly effect the your system.

These are only some possible RAM combinations.*

DRAM Jumper Settings:

  • The VIA MVP3 chipset on your MB allows for a great deal of flexibility when choosing memory for your system. This chipset enables you to run your memory at the Front Side Bus (FSB) frequency, or at the frequency of the AGP slot. (Twice the PCI frequency.)
  • CLK4 & SDRAM1 control the DIMM frequency on the VA-503+.

Memory Speed =

Set Jumpers to:

CLK4 SDRAM1
FSB 1 & 2 2 & 3
AGP 2 & 3 1 & 2

SDRAM1 & SDRAM2 control the Northbridge Chip.

  • There are four devices connected directly to the Northbridge chip; the CPU, the PCI bus, the main
    memory and the AGP slot.

Northbridge Setting =

Set Jumpers to:

SDRAM2 SDRAM3
2 2 & 3 2 & 3
2.5* 1 & 2 1 & 2
3 1 & 2 2 & 3

Setting CPU External Frequency:

  • CLK1, CLK2, CLK3 determine the CPU External Frequency (CEF), also known as FSB.
CEF  = Set Jumpers to:
CLK1 CLK2 CLK3
66 MHz 1 & 2 1 & 2 1 & 2
68.5 MHz 2 & 3 2 & 3 2 & 3

CMOS Settings:

The settings in your CMOS are extremely important to optimal system performance. Given the amount of hardware options available on any given system it would be unreasonable to suggest settings that would be appropriate for all possible variables.

It would be more beneficial for those interested in optimizing thier system performance to become educated, regarding the options available through the CMOS Setup Utility, and make the best choices considering the hardware components installed in thier system.

One of the best educational tools for CMOS is located @ http://www.lemig.umontreal.ca/bios/bios_sg.htm
